The development known as One The Elephant is designed to transform a part of Elephant & Castle and will comprise a brand new leisure centre and a mixed-use residential tower. The 37-storey tower block, designed by Squire & Partners for Lendlease, will be clad in glass, stone and stainless steel panels; complying with the architect’s brief of timelessness and long-life expectancy.
When complete, the tower will stand as the seventh tallest residential building in the UK at 127 metres high. The tower aims to set the tone for future Lendlease schemes across the Heygate Estate site and is testimony to their commitment to the area. The development also includes a 4-storey Pavilion building with pre-cast concrete cladding to complement the façade of the Metropolitan Tabernacle nearby.
Wintech have been involved on the project from the early days of its inception and are delivering a valuable scope of façade consultancy services aimed at improving the life expectancy, environmental performance and durability of the finished façade while reducing costs. The façade will be constructed largely from unitised curtain walls providing benefits of speed of erection and finished quality.
The envelopes of both areas of the development are designed to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions with air tightness and high insulation levels. One The Elephant is expected to be one of the first buildings of its kind to achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. The tower is set to be completed for spring 2016.
